Going the distance, makes all the difference

The Mehta’s took the leap from sleepy Hobart to metropolitan Melbourne and, at first, were struck by the lack of greenspaces and nature, until they found their perfect fit in Melbourne’s West.

After moving to Melbourne for more opportunities and schooling possibilities for their young daughter, Maitri and Abhishek Mehta began the search for their ideal first home.

“We were in the Caroline Springs area for an event for one of our daughter’s friends and when we saw the Carolina community and the natural surrounds we thought, ‘this feels nice, this feels like our home’,” Maitri said.

The area had the small town feel they’d grown to love about Hobart, while still allowing them to be 24km’s from Melbourne’s CBD and mere moments from retail hubs including Watergardens Shopping Centre, a selection of primary and secondary schools and greenspaces.

“The location, schooling, and amenities were important to us when choosing our first home. We got all of them ticked in outer Melbourne, so we thought, ‘let’s make the move’.”

The couple settled on a three-bedroom townhome in AVID’s Carolina community, putting down their deposit in just three days. The choice proved to be a cost-effective one, particularly in comparison to their experiences with homes in Hobart.

“To fit our budget in Hobart we would have to buy a home at least half-an-hour outside the city, where the nearest supermarket would be 15 minutes away; whereas in Deanside and Caroline Springs everything you need is within a five-minute drive,” Maitri said.

“We really fell in love with the community feel of Caroline Springs and Deanside, so a townhome was an affordable choice within that area that checked all the boxes for our small family.”

As for her favourite element of the home, Maitri loved that the townhome design still had the same natural light you’d expect from a stand-alone dwelling.

“We loved the large windows which bring so much sunlight into the home as well as the dual storey layout. It’s a good size but still easy to maintain. We live busy lives, especially having a young daughter, so we let the upstairs bedroom level be a bit messy while the living areas downstairs stay neat and tidy for entertaining,” Ms Mehta said.

While Maitri has travelled a long way to find her family’s ideal address, she insists that it’s important to avoid an endless search for perfection in your home.

“We believe if you find something you like you should go for it, rather than hunting for this perfect place, the trick is you make it perfect.”
