Palmview Community Opens $4 Million Park

August 4, 2022 | IN Media Release and News | BY AVID | 4 min read

Palmview residents will have another compelling reason to get outside to enjoy the Sunshine Coast’s enviable lifestyle with the opening of a new $4 million park this weekend in AVID Property Group’s (AVID) Harmony community – offering local families a range of innovative play and sporting equipment.

In a commitment to creating community hubs that encourage a healthy and active lifestyle for the region, the new District Recreation Park expands over five hectares of green open space with equipment catered to all ages, even Harmony’s smallest adventures – toddlers and children as young as two years old.

AVID General Manager Queensland Bruce Harper said the park opening was an important milestone for the Harmony community and is looking forward to seeing locals get out and enjoy the best of the Sunshine State’s lifestyle.

“This is an exciting milestone, not just for our residents but for the wider Sunshine Coast community, after an extensive design consultation and construction process,” Mr Harper said.

“There really is something for everybody in this park, with a 30-meter-long double flying fox and spinning carousel for the daredevils, a tree-inspired three-tower play hut that boasts seven slides, play panels, climbing nets and wobbly bridges, along with a half basketball court and mini soccer goals,’’ he said.

“Working with Urban Play to deliver the equipment, the park will also feature a learn-to-ride bike track, three bay swings with a toddler, classic and inclusive bird nest seat surrounded by shaded seating and expanses of green space.”

Contributing to Harmony’s sense of place and the community’s urban and natural environment, Sunshine Coast-based artist Simone Eisler was commissioned to deliver a public art installation – titled Winged Arbour – that enhances the landscape and built environment.

“I’ve been working with the AVID team since October of last year to develop a public art piece for the District Recreation Park, with Winged Arbour being a brand-new sculptural form I had never created before,” Ms Eisler said.

“Made from aluminum and finished with copper and verdigris patina, the piece consists of two forms with a face integrated into them – one looking up and one looking out – and are evocative of the many things, like wings and leaves, to truly encapsulate the concept of nature.

“Living on the Coast I am beyond familiar with the natural beauty on our doorstep, so I truly hope Winged Arbour speaks to the community’s togetherness as locals begin exploring the new park on Saturday.”

The park opening follows the recent completion of the District Recreation Park’s off-leash dog park which was fast-tracked, opening earlier in the year more than six months ahead of schedule.

“We know that our Harmony community are passionate about their dogs and want places for their dogs to run free. The addition of the new dog park as part of the District Recreation Park has ensured our four-legged residents are well catered for,” Mr Harper said.

“The dog park has already been well loved by our community, just recently having hosted our Paws in the Park event with the Sunshine Coast Lightning, so we are very much looking forward to celebrating the opening of the park with Harmony Fun Day this Saturday,’’ he said.

“Harmony will ultimately boast more than 130 hectares of open space and with the official opening of the District Recreation Park as part of the development, we are able to offer something for everyone in our community.”

The District Recreation Park will officially open at Harmony Fun Day on Saturday 6 August at 10am. The new park is located on the corner of Recreation Drive and Flintwood Crescent. There will be plenty of entertainment for the whole family – and community – to enjoy, with free ice cream and coffee, food trucks, music and more.
