Downsizers seek out unique solutions for the whole family
Intergenerational living is on the rise but with it also being synonymous with cramped homes and a lack of independence, Australians are seeking unique solutions offering the benefits of the trend but without having multiple generations under the one roof.
With Australia facing an aging population,1 more downsizers are now having to consider the needs of their parents as they embark on their own retirement journey.
One family who found the right balance is the Goldsworthy’s who recently made the move to Waterline Place by AVJennings (now AVID Property Group) in Williamstown, after seeking out a new home which suited both their retirement and changing family needs.
Shane Goldsworthy and his wife were initially drawn to Waterline Place because of the ability to lock up and leave after they had returned from a caravan trip around Australia to find their home in need of some desperate ‘TLC’.
“Having recently retired, we had spoken about downsizing, and this was just the push we needed to find something we could easily pack up and feel confident our home was secure when we’re away,” Mr Goldsworthy said.
After exploring the project, they soon realized Waterline Place offered a home solution for not just them, but for Shane’s mother as well.
“We fell in love with the area the second we saw it, and our family and friends felt the same, with my mum purchasing a one-bedroom apartment two years after us,” he said.
“She had a stroke at Christmas, and it has been life-changing having her so close – I’ve been able to check on her every day. It’s really reassuring to know we are literally only a ‘door knock’ away.
“Now my sister’s moving in too after purchasing a townhome here. We’ll essentially all be under the same roof, but with our own homes, our own space and importantly without feeling like we’re on top of each other.”
AVID General Manager Victoria Penny Forrest said family referrals were a common trend for the developer, with many of its communities across the country seeing parents, siblings, grandparents and even cousins all choosing to become neighbours.
“Having family nearby is often easily taken for granted – when loved ones get sick or injured, being able to check in without having to get in the car for an hour can make all the difference,” Ms Forrest said.
“Being able to walk a few doors down to visit family takes so much stress out of everyday life and knowing there’s a greater network to share in that support is what our communities are all about.”
