Plenty to See and Do in the Sunshine State’s Capital

July 13, 2023 | IN Together Magazine | BY AVID | 3 min read

Queensland’s laid-back capital of Brisbane is known for its world heritage rainforests, riverside restaurants, and inner-city river ferry services called “CityCats” and “KittyCats”.

Brisbane is also becoming known for hosting major sporting and cultural events, thanks to its modern theatres, auditoriums, and world-class stadiums. Some of the world’s best sandy beaches are just a stone’s throw away from the city’s heart; it is only about a 90-minute drive to the relaxed and colourful Sunshine Coast, and about 60 minutes’ drive to reach Queensland’s Gold Coast with all its theme parks, shows, resorts, casino, shopping, and other attractions.

In 2018 the Gold Coast hosted the Commonwealth Games, and soon the whole world’s eyes will be on Brisbane, which is abuzz with new revitalisation and infrastructure plans in preparation for the 2032 Olympic Games.

Brisbane offers some truly wonderful weekend or longer stay experiences regardless of whether you’re an adventure buff, looking to relax with the family, or wanting to spend lots of time in your swimmers.

Opa Bar + Mezze, Brisbane City

A Greek riverside eatery in the heart of Brisbane will have you yelling Opa! after the first taste of saganaki or sip of the 200-bottle-long wine list. Take your pick from the casual high-seating marble bar, the formal dining room, or the comfortable lounging sofa booths.

Fishbowl, Gasworks Plaza, Newstead

Sydney’s favourite Poke joint, Fishbowl has finally migrated north and found home in Newstead. Fishbowl offers nutritious bowls bursting with fresh flavour – think miso eggplant, soy-glazed salmon, and crispy chicken.

Imaginaria, South Brisbane

Feed your imagination at Imaginaria – an immersive, art-filled playground that combines light, sound, sculpture and gaming to enliven the senses. On until the end of April 2023, this is one you don’t want to miss out on!

Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), South Brisbane

Whether you’re a seasoned art lover or an art amateur, look no further than GOMA for your culture fix. With a range of global exhibitions on show year-round, each visit to GOMA will bring a new experience.

Jan Powers Farmers Markets, Brisbane Powerhouse

No Saturday morning in Brisbane is spent better than at the Jan Powers Farmers Markets, right beside New Farm Park. Scattered with a range of market stalls offering fresh fruit and veg and artisan treats, there’s something for everyone.

James Street Precinct, Fortitude Valley

James Street is to Brisbane what Oxford Street is to Sydney and is what High Street is to Melbourne. Discover some of Australia’s most coveted designers while moseying along the leafy streets of Brisbane’s best shopping precinct.

Hotel X, Fortitude Valley

A sight to behold, Hotel X is poised in the heart of Fortitude Valley, just minutes from Brisbane’s CBD, and the popular restaurant strip and watering hole, Howard Smith Wharves. Hotel X, comprises a rooftop bar, French restaurant, skyline-view pool, in-house gym and much more!

Mercure Clear Mountain, Clear Mountain

For those seeking a hinterland retreat, the Mercure Clear Mountain Lodge is the perfect holiday break or romantic getaway, just 30 minutes away from Brisbane!
